Maori Party Foreign Affairs and Trade spokesperson Hone Harawira says public scrutiny of Sealord's investments in north-west Africa is a good thing.

"We support the Sahrawi people's rights to self-determination in Western Sahara, and endorse the UN's calls for the illegal Moroccan occupation to end," said Mr Harawira.

“The International Court of Justice recommended in 1975 that the United Nations should continue to pursue self-determination for the Sahrawis, and yet for over thirty years the Sahrawi people have endured a harsh, alienating economic environment and social isolation," he said.

"Just as New Zealand has sought to honour its responsibilities as a global citizen in the Myanmar crisis, so too it is appropriate that we respect and support the opportunity for the Sahrawi people to be self-determining”.

“Unemployment figures in the March quarter Household Labour Force Survey are not only an ‘absolute shocker’,” says Maori Party employment spokesperson Dr Pita Sharples, “they are a national disgrace”.

Brendan O’Donovan, chief economist for Westpac has described the seasonally adjusted loss of 29,000 jobs as “an absolute shocker” - pushing the national average unemployment rate to 3.6 per cent.

“But in the detail released today we see that unemployment rates for Maori had shot up from 7.3% in December, to 8.6%. Rates for Pacific peoples are now 8.2%, compared with 3 per cent for Europeans” said Dr Sharples.

“Today’s figures not only reveal the largest percentage decline in employment since March 1989, they also reflect the depth and persistence of poverty being felt more frequently in Māori and Pasifika families.

ImageA formal Memorandum of Understanding between Ngati Toa, based in Porirua, and the University of Otago is a great way for academia to acknowledge tangata whenua in a relationship modelled on the Treaty of Waitangi, said local MP Tariana Turia.

The six-year MOU was signed this week at Takapuwahia marae in Porirua.

"An agreement like this establishes a kaupapa on which a relationship can evolve. It is a statement of good faith, and commitment to a future together," said Mrs Turia.

"This is a much more constructive approach than we have seen in other parts of this rohe.

The Maori Party is outraged by news that the Manfield Park Board has sold part of the Kawakawa block in Feilding for private development – even though tangata whenua claim the land was unlawfully taken from them a century ago.

“Our opposition to the Manfield Park Bill, and opposition by Ngati Kauwhata, has proven to be justified,” said local MP Tariana Turia.

“Here is another clear breach of good faith by the Crown. The Parliament passed that Bill knowing full well there were questions over the validity of the title.

“Ngati Kauwhata made submissions to the Select Committee, and told us about their petition to Parliament in 1932, which set out the basis for their claims. But that petition was destroyed by fire while in the care of Parliament, and nothing was done at the time to correct matters.

“The iwi have filed two claims with the Waitangi Tribunal in respect of this land. They asked for a delay so their claims could be investigated.

“The iwi made it clear that they did not oppose development of Manfield – what they objected to was being prevented from having any involvement. There were solutions to be found, if only there was time.

Enrolment drive starts despite poor awareness it is election year

A major enrolment drive for this year’s election kicks off Monday 5 May - at a time when research shows many people don’t even know its election year.

The Electoral Enrolment Centre has started the countdown to the Parliamentary election by posting enrolment update packs to everyone who is currently enrolled to check that their details are right.

"Our enrolment drive is a key step to getting New Zealanders ready for the election. But we are doing it at a time when research tells us there are low levels of awareness that it is election year amongst Pacific, Maori, Asian and young people," says Murray Wicks, National Manager, Electoral Enrolment Centre.

"The research shows over half of Pacific and young people, and just under half of Maori and Asian people don’t know its election year."

Clear link between learning difficulties and poverty
Hon Tariana Turia, Co-leader of the Maori Party
Wednesday 30 April 2008

ImageMaori Party Co-leader, Tariana Turia, has today highlighted the obvious association between poverty and educational under-achievement reported in CPAG’s latest report, ‘Left Behind’.

“You don’t have to be Einstein to understand the link being made by CPAG” said Mrs Turia , whanau development spokesperson for the Maori Party.

“Poverty has a huge impact on school communities in limiting the amount of resources available for supporting teachers and students to achieve their full potential” said Mrs Turia.

“The report draws out the educational impacts of insecure housing leading to ‘house-hopping’ "said Mrs Turia.

Maori Party keen to debate solutions, not distractions
Press statement by Dr Pita Sharples, 30 April 2008
Co-leader and Justice Spokesperson for the Maori Party

ImageThe Maori Party’s approach to dealing with offending and punishment is to champion programmes that work, not to argue over failed policies and extremist views, said Dr Pita Sharples.

Dr Sharples was responding to allegations by Garth McVicar that, by declining an invitation to appear on television, the Maori Party was refusing to debate the issues.

“The Maori Party’s views on the subject are perfectly clear. We released a press statement explaining why we believe tent prisons and chain gangs will not reduce criminal offending,” he said.

Call to keep cigarettes out of The Warehouse

ImageMaori Party Tobacco Out of Aotearoa spokesperson Hone Harawira is calling for cigarettes to be kept off the counters of the country’s largest retail chain.

“The Warehouse could become the next biggest seller of tobacco products if the judge of a Court of Appeal case, which starts today (April 29) in Wellington, allows three Foodstuffs cooperatives and Woolworths Ltd to acquire up to 100% shares in, or assets of, the red shed retail chain.

“Stephen Tindall [The Warehouse founder] deserves an award for keeping tobacco out of his stores and in doing so putting the nation’s health before profits,” Mr Harawira said. “I urge Foodstuffs and Woolworths to honour that if they are allowed to bid and take over ownership.”
